Perfect morning for it with lots of peaks and a beautiful sunrise.

This was my first time shooting in the water and I'm really happy about the way it went!

Surfing with Porter Hogan.. yep, at it again. :)

Sitting here in laguna after the sun has gone down just thinking about life and how much I've been given.. It's an incredible thing that I am super super grateful of. I surfed today after a busy weekend of shooting some really good waves, and being in the water has got to be the sweetest thing ever! My arms hurt, my body is tired, it's 6pm and I'm thinking about bed.. yet I'm excited to wake up at the crack of dawn and get back at it, whether shooting photos or surfing waves, doesn't matter, it's going to be awesome.

I've seen these beaches hundreds of times now, but each time I see them I'm as stoked as the first. Their beautiful, powerful, and changing everyday. I'll never tire of seeing them, I'll always miss them when I'm not here. I guess I'm just overwhelmed by my privileges.

You know what, it could be you. Chase your dreams people. Don't let money get in your way. I made less than 2,000$ last year, but here I am. Nothing is impossible, good economy or horrible economy, do what you intend to do and do it with all your might. I credit God for my gifts and I thank Him everyday for what He has given me. I can't wait for tomorrow, to see what's in store and what else God wants to put in front of me to shoot and enjoy. Today is photos of porter, tomorrow could be anyone, anywhere, doing anything.. Just keeping my feet moving and my hands busy, that's the biggest trick, oh, and giving that glory to our Creator. Be real, love what you do, and enjoy it! :)

Here is yet another day of shooting some amazing surf.

This trip is turning out a million times better than what I had thought.. Waves are so good!

I never thought I'd see some of these spots light up like they are now.

Colin Wilson is a ripping shredder! Yesterday at Troll I watched him do a handful of things I would have never come up with on my own and definitely would be hesitant to try. Tonight we were shooting some Monument photos in front of our monument, the state capital... nothing else to do, so why not?

It's still warm enough out on the last hours of december to chill in a hoodie for hours at a time outside... brutal. I'm about to pack bags and head for waves.... can't stand this brown town any longer. But, tomorrow is Cash for Kids!! Academy's comp at Hyland Hills. Jonas and Jordan Michilot will be there tossing a few dollars at awesome tricks landed. Come enjoy the last day of the year with us!!

Hmmmm.... Well, hope you all had an awesome Christmas and are looking forward to an amazing new year! With that.. I really would be stoked if the new year brought us some fresh snow. : /

Instead of the usual handrail sessions that are happening this time of year, we have been resort riding day after day after day. I guess It's not at all that bad when you look at it as a hobby or a sport, but if it's your 'job' it's leaving us hurting this year.

To not let it get us down to badly I grabbed a bunch of 32 promo and Austin Young, Krister Ralles, Dave Parker and myself did a lil jib fest for stickers and Ammo copies. It was fun stoking the kids out and tossing in some extra christmas cheer. :)

I was out snowboarding at Wild Mountain this afternoon into the evening. Man, it was so fun out there. I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas! Awesome time with family in the morning, friends: Austin Young and Ethan Deiss in the afternoon, and skyping with my beautiful girl Tatum in the evening. Everything I could ask for. Thank you Jesus!

I guess we could all start praying for snow? Just an idea.. maybe to bring in the new year? It's not supposed to happen, but hey, there's power in prayer.

Even with no snow, go check out your local resort! I've been to most of the ones in the midwest this past week, and they are all so fun right now! It's been a good winter for resorts to make parks, cold enough to make snow and warm enough to keep it soft. Go use your new shred gear(hopefully some 32 gear) and go ride. :)

I got some new flashes so I was out at Wild Mountain this evening trying to learn how to use them.

I picked the biggest feature I could, this jump, also something I never shoot, jumps.

So a double challenge for myself to figure out new lighting equipment.

This image is of Porter Hogan from this last summer surfing in Laguna Beach.

My thoughts behind this... As I was laying out pages for SBN #5 I came across the photo of the backside ollie and one of an amazing sunset over Catalina Island. While attempting to keep my already 142 page mag short enough to keep a readers attention and tons more photos to go I began to work with methods I usually stay away from, like editing a photo(I don't edit other than minor color corrections, I hate editing photos). But this one.. why not overlap it and play with the opacity? I think the final image turned out very well. The simplicity of what I did to create an unusual look. The same sunset shot from down low, and one up high with porter and his sick style. I dunno.. turned out to really like it. You can find this image in SBN #5, pages 94-95.

What a group of guys. I made them all get together for this shot, they grudgingly excepted. One day my friends, we'll all be stoked we have these shots. :)

The set up was so sick this year! The favorite being a down bar with a tricky approach from the left side. There was an closeout elbow combination that kept everyone mixing up the bag of tricks. I think 120 kids signed up and rode, making for quite the turn out.

Thanks to all involved! Especially Powder Ridge and the park crew for all their hard work.

How much would you purchase the photos for?
I'm very interested to know!

I have Set prices at $75, reason for this is at a printer the cost for a 12x18 matte finish runs about 40$ for a high quality print, which is what I would like to put out, not cheap wal-mart prints. For a couple reasons I am doing that.

1. Supporting local artist Mark Rivard, which in return supports our economy. It's all the hype these days isn't it?! He is my printer and a great artists, something worth our business.

2. I consider my work to be my art, God given, and not taken for granted. I'm not about to send out ok photos to anyone, only high quality prints.

My dilemma is this. If you order a print for $45 and I only get one ordered I will loose money after all costs and shipping. But, I can get 50 prints for $75, so the first print sells for $75, and there after $45. If you have, or are going to purchase a print still set at $75, then you are the first to purchase the photo, and you are the first to support through that image.

Remember, I'm not trying to make a profit off this, I'm trying to get Tatum Gordon $2,600.00 before the end of December.

Anything that goes above and beyond that will be put to non-profit ministries including Snowboard days for underprivileged children in the Twin Cities Metro area, also proceeds are going to be saved for a Missions Surf Camp being planned by Arthur Cachero and myself for fall 2013 in Ecuador.

You could be someone to help start our ministry.

Also, these are not the only photos I have, and it doesn't have to be a 12x18, it can be whatever you are looking for. So, what would you like to see?

Jacob Stieler and his cancer story.

I wouldn't normally blog something like this.. But this story could potentially be very important in many of our lives.

I love kids, and working with kids, working youth camps.. they aren't just kids, they are the next generation running this world. We are supposed to make good decisions for the people of the future, not stupid decisions potentially ruining all future.

So if you feel like reading... This is Jacob's story.

BREAKING: Farris defends major parental rights case (medical decisions) in Michigan

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

Who should make very difficult decisions for children? Parents or doctors? In March of this year, 8-year-old Jacob Stieler was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a dangerous bone cancer. His parents took him to a highly-rated children’s oncology center in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Jacob had surgery to remove the tumor, which was followed by several rounds of chemotherapy. The treatment was incredibly difficult, and Jacob’s mom, Erin, told me that when she looked her son in the eyes, she knew in her heart that he simply could not survive many more rounds of these drugs. Erin and Ken, Jacob’s mom and dad, joined by hundreds of others, prayed for Jacob and his complete recovery.		Donate to the Homeschool Freedom Fund to help with this case!
After all of these rounds of chemotherapy were completed, there was a PET scan done to check on the status of the cancer. There was no evidence of cancer detected in Jacob’s body. Jacob’s family and friends rejoiced in his healing—praising God for this wonderful outcome. But the doctors wanted to give Jacob several more rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, despite the clean PET scan. When asked why they wanted to keep giving Jacob these incredibly dangerous drugs, the doctors replied that this was “the standard of care” for his illness. Jacob’s parents begged the doctors to make an individual diagnosis, rather than simply following unbending standards. But the doctors were steadfast. All children with this cancer needed multiple rounds of these drugs—regardless of PET scan results, the doctors contended. Jacob’s parents did extensive study of the side effects of the five different chemotherapy drugs that the doctor wanted to administer. And they believed that the risk of the drugs was far greater than the risk of recurrent cancer, since Jacob had a clean PET scan. They said no to the doctors. No more chemotherapy treatment for now.
But the doctors would not take no for an answer. They called child protective services in Jacob’s county and asked the agency to file charges against the family for medical neglect. After looking into the matter, both the local CPS agency and the local prosecuting attorney refused to file charges. They believed that the parents were making reasonable decisions for Jacob. The doctors still would not take no for an answer. They called higher authorities in the state level CPS agency. The doctors had to make several calls before they finally found someone who would agree with them. As a result of all of these calls, the local CPS agency was pressured into filing medical neglect charges against the parents. The local prosecutor still refused to take a case against the family, so the state level CPS officials hired an independent private lawyer to serve as the prosecutor against Ken and Erin Stieler. A jury trial is scheduled for early January to determine if the doctors will be given the authority to take over the medical decision-making for Jacob.
When I heard about this case—and checked out the facts—I knew that I could not sit on the sidelines and watch this family be overrun and parental rights be trashed by well-meaning but overzealous doctors. I recently flew to Michigan and took the depositions of all three doctors who were scheduled to testify against the family. Jacob’s treating physician is the key. I prepared for the depositions by obtaining copies of the official “package inserts” that the FDA requires all drug companies to give to physicians and patients. Undoubtedly, you have seen these inserts when you have picked up prescriptions for your children. The inserts tell you several things: Indicated uses—that is a list of the diseases for which there is evidence that the drug is a safe and effective treatment. Warnings—these are strong cautions that indicate serious potential issues. Side effects—these disclose all of the potential consequences that arise from taking the drug. Approved for children—there is a specific disclaimer on many drugs that indicate whether the drugs have been proven to be safe and effective for children. “Have all of these drugs been approved by the FDA as safe and effective for children?” I asked Jacob’s treating oncologist. “Yes,” she replied, they have been FDA-approved for children. According to the official package inserts that we were able to obtain, she is just flat wrong. She wanted to continue to give Ifosfamide to Jacob. The FDA disclosure for this drug says: “Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.” The oncologist wanted to give Jacob a weeks’ worth of Etoposide. The FDA disclosure says: “Pediatric Use: Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established.” The warning on the drug Doxorubicin says: “Pediatric patients are at increased risk for developing delayed cardiotoxicity.” This means that the drug can cause severe harm to a child’s heart—at even higher rates than it can in adults. In fact, as it turned out, the treating doctor had never even seen, much less read, these official FDA-required package inserts. She did state that she had seen similar information from other sources. Most of the drugs did not list Jacob’s form of cancer as an “indicated use.” This means that these drugs had not been tested and validated as safe and effective for this particular kind of cancer—even for adults, much less for children. And then we get to the official warnings and side effects. In addition to the strong warnings about “congestive heart failure” from Doxorubicin, other drugs the doctor wanted to give were known to have caused cancer—new forms of cancer—in patients being treated for an original cancer. Vincristine’s label is typical of these warnings: “Patients who received chemotherapy with vinchristine sulfate in combination with anticancer drugs known to be carcinogenic have developed second malignancies.” The warning labels say that sometimes these second cancers develop years after the treatment. All five of the drugs that the doctors want to give Jacob are either known to cause other cancers or have not been fully tested. Some of the other side effects for these drugs include: Damage to the cranial motor nerves Serious infections Failure of boys to sexually mature The inability to father children Anorexia It would take pages to recite all of the warnings and side effects. Parental rights are increasingly being lost in the medical arena. I am beginning to wonder why physicians even bother asking for parental consent if they will just do an end run around the parents whenever it is convenient for them to do so. This is not an easy case. It is not a case where a child has a current illness and the treatment is tested and proven to be safe and effective—those cases are easily resolved. The best evidence is that Jacob no longer has objective evidence of cancer. And not a single drug that the doctors want to give Jacob is FDA-approved for children for his kind of cancer. This is a case where there must be a judgment call—a balancing of risks. Who makes that call? The doctor told me during the deposition that she thinks that she should make the call—for every child in this situation. And she would give the same answer every time, rather than making an individual judgment. I can’t imagine a more clear case of the need for parental rights. This is a decision that requires the wisdom of God. HSLDA was established to defend parental rights in the context of homeschooling. But the assault on parental rights comes to us on many fronts. This is why we have set up the Homeschool Freedom Fund to enable us to fight important cases for the broader principle of parental rights. Our regular membership fees do not stretch far enough to cover these kinds of cases. We truly need your help to be able to fight for the principles we all hold dear. In cases like this one, our legal system must remain steadfast in following the principle that God has delegated these kinds of decisions to parents, not to doctors, social workers, or courts. I'll be praying for the family and their rights. Parents deserve the right to make choices, religious or not religious, It should be up to the people. In this case, I do think the choice needs to be up to the parents! He deserves a chance to be drug free and healing, hopefully growing stronger, and with no side effects.

Pretty much it's a beginning of the season comp during demo days, Wild Mountain, where all you have to be able to do to compete is krack an ollie. Highest ollie wins. Even if you don't have a 3ft vertical leap the good times, awesome crew, hot dawgs, and free swag should keep you coming back for more ollies.

You can lap this park a few hundred times in the 4 hours it has been open each day. Want to learn tricks? This is the way to do it.

Austin Young and I have been getting there early and getting the set-up all dialed in, making Wild the most fun pre-season yet! With a little permission and some shovels we have been making feature after feature packed with challenges, and large gaps! So FUN!

This corrugated pipe gets moved pretty constantly.. it's light making it easy, so it just goes everywhere doing everything. Gap it, slam it, wallie it, make it a quarter pipe.. all sorts of options. So, if your looking for a good shred sesh come join in! see ya there.

By purchasing a print you will be helping Tatum Gordon continue on her 8 month mission trip through YWAM, NewCastle, Australia. I am trying to raise an additional $2,000.00 so that Tatum can afford her plane tickets and travel expenses, sending her to Latvia, Holland, and Russia to work with YWAM's programs in those country's. First trip of the season; with Ryan Paul and Austin Young.

Ryan's Idea: Go Snowboarding in WI.

We were watching the weather and it had been snowing a lot in WI last week, so we decided to pack up a car and go have a little fun, just enough to start the season out right. We left early Thursday morning and returned 36 hours later to enjoy another weekend at our now open resorts in MN.

We were driving through some familiar territory and came across the 3m rail, found it setup and ready to go. Ryan went front lip, nailed it perfect right away, first shots of the season.

Driving around was so awesome! Few places are as pretty as the Midwest during winter. First snow and a lot of it made this trip one of the most scenic trips of my life.

After an evening of driving from town to town looking for things to do we parked the car in a pretty unique spot right on Lake Superior. We woke up to this sunrise blasting through the foggy car windows. Thanks to Ryan for having such a comfy Subaru.

I love this world we live in!!! It's so pretty, just can't get enough of travel, finding these new places...

I do realize that it probably seems strange that this MN kid keeps posting surf photos.. well, what porter said is true. I go to California in the summer and come back to MN in the winter. My relatives all think I'm nuts and have it backwards. Truth is, I have it right! Snow, skate, and surf; the life to live? Yes mam!

Working my way to living a life without limits is tricky though, takes it tolls, and many friends left in different states. Just stoked to have porter posting freshies so I can live the beach life through his blog!

SNOWBOARDING!!??

Yes, it is that time again.

Trollhaugen, WI and Wild Mountain, MN both opened up yesterday to begin the season of 2011-2012! whoo hoo! I am excited.

I started out the year with Austin Young and Dave Parker at Troll yesterday. For the set-up there were a few rails, boxes, and jumps spread out in the deepest snow. You can take almost a full run, but it's a bit of a hike at the time... Well worth it to those looking to get their first turns in!

SKATEBOARDING!!??

After snow, time to skate. We went to the St. Croix skate park to get a few more lines in for the day.

Austin Ollie's a trash can.

Little Garret Mckenzie was at the park. He wasn't able to go shred snow today, but he did get a few epic scooter tricks in on the concrete.

The reason we went skating.. dave parker. Trying to get a few more shots before the park is closed down for the winter. Here dave is boosting some pretty decent airs into the bowl at St. Croix.

I joined my friend Ryan Paul today at his lil skate demo, skate day he held in Elliot Park, Minneapolis.

It was so rad!!! There was a pretty good turn out of kids who wanted to learn how to skate on this beautiful day.

I really can't think of a better way to spend time than giving it to other people. Today made me think a lot about what I do in the summer and all the things that could be done in a summer. Kids need people to look up to, who better than guys like Ryan Paul? I don't know a ton of people that will spend their time and money to teach kids they've never met how to skate. So, thank you RP for your example! Making an impact in the lives of many.

I went to Ay's house today to hang out and work on projects for a bit.. this is what I walked up to. Ay was flaying some tasty looking smaller fish with this guy sitting on ice next to him... He went up north yesterday and scored.
