this just in...

hahahaha.... oh man.
I wanted to be amped about my new toy, but then this photo happened and now I just feel like an emo kid. Note to self, no photos after shower or at least get the hair out of your peripherals.
On a more serious note, I am so amped on my new toy!!! The SPL came in today and I can't wait to get into the surf with it. I've been dreaming of this moment for a very long, long time. :)

I took it out in front this evening hoping that the sunset would be a little brighter, oh well, can't win every time.  Its good to know that it doesn't leak! And of course any water time is a good time.

looking back at tatum on shore. Gloomy test run, maybe tomorrow will be better.

So stoked! Hoping to be putting some solid content on this blog in the upcoming winter months here on Maui. I am replacing snowboarding with surfing this winter in hopes to possibly further my career as an all around action photo guy. That and surf has just had my attention for the last few years and I feel like exploring it more could turn out very fruitful. We'll see.

stay tuned and mahalo.
Aloha,

Bamboo Forest.

Yesterday Tatum and I went for a hike in the Bamboo Forest here on Maui.
Its a beautiful hike! You can either make it pretty melo and see some real good scenery, or you can go all out and make intense climbs through this thick bamboo forest. Tatum and I did a little of both. The main path is well used and easy to follow, but there are a few(way more than I know of) that are really hard to navigate. If you have a day with nothing planned I'd put this on a list of things to do when visiting maui. Its way easier than Commando but just as beautiful as the rest of the hikes on the Island.

Perched in the jungle.

'Thick as Bamboo.'
If that's not a saying it should be...

one of the many waterfalls you can cross over.
I thought it was a pretty nice scene so I took one home with me.

Gotta love Maui.

Sam Olson.

This is a shout-out for Sam Olson!
this last winter we were shooting some perfect little barrels at salt creek and this image is one of a few he got. Sam is an awesome photographer and a really great guy. Check out his work here.. http://www.sammyolson.com/

Surf to be thankful for!

Woke up to some surf!! Surf with no wind!!
Maui was thankful as can be this Thanksgiving.

Robby.
Met robby yesterday and surfed with him in the AM and again in the PM.
Watching him surf makes me pretty jealous, he rips. I can only hope that some day I can surf even a fraction like he does. Until then, I hope to shoot with him a lot more.

Josh, met him briefly yesterday.. He was ripping all morning making maneuvers like these look easy.  I was stoked to be able to get a shot of this backside smash. The full sequence is even better.. Again, I'm hoping to get chances to get out and shoot with josh more also.

 Jake Randall.
He goes to calvary chapel bible college here in island, its always good to get out with him and a few of the other students. Ripper!

Fun day.

No wind and good swell was more than I could have asked for this thanksgiving morning, it's such a blessing to see it and enjoy it.

thanks for checkin in.

the "port hole".

The final touches on Porter's new board, the "port hole".

The product looks good! But we will see how it surfs this up-coming january when porter come out here to maui to ride it. Zach is a great shaper and this board looks so fun! So I am crossing my fingers hoping that we get some big swell in order for porter to get the best chance possible to really give this board a go.

Here is a video showing the finishing touches on the board.
Uncut raw edit. Why not. Take a look.

The last touch-ups on Porter Hogan's new board by Zach McCook, Seaworthy Shapes Hawaii.

It looks great! can't wait for january.

thanks for checkin in

Zack McCook. Seaworthy Shapes.

Here are some images I shot the other night while making a video edit of Zach shaping Porter Hogan's Hawaii Board.

Its a  6'2", 18.5" x 2.2", with a 5" rounded squash tail.
Pretty legit deck.

Almost done.. Zach likes to do 2 sessions on a board so that he has time to think about while not feeling rushed. Good call.

I can't wait to see the final product and really can't wait to see porter rip on this board.
Aloha!

thanks for checkin in

On the Wall.

Photos on the wall.

This is an enlargement from my StillWater Tree shot printed onto plywood.
Both pieces are from the same photo, the smaller focusing tighter on the road and tree.

Thanks to the guys at Sign Solutions Ltd for the ideas and help getting these images onto the wood.
Looks great!

thanks,

The Octopus.

Underwater World. :)

Octopus!
These guys are so elusive, but, now that I know what I'm looking for I can find them often.
So fun! one of my favorites under the water.

Master of Camouflage.

oh! new pet!
or just for a little while..
I've learned how to catch them and its one of the coolest things I've ever figured out! haha. doesn't sound like much but it is pretty sweet to hold a taco.

It tried swimming away at first, but after about 10min or so it started warming up to me and was crawling around my hands and arm.
They are so impossible to get off once they stick on! Look at all those suction cups!

relaxed.

It did spray me one last time when I swam it back down to the reef..
Ungrateful little guy.. I could have taken him home and had dinner!

Tucked away safe and sound.

and of course a honu!
See so many of these guys out there.

thanks for lookin!

My Rarest Find.

Check this out, a Hawaiian Monk Seal!

I was out shooting photos the other day when this guy buzzed me! I had just filled up my lungs to go to the bottom to photograph a turtle when I caught it out of the corner of my eye. I turned to see what it was and about the same time it turned to see what I was! It did a little dance for me and then continued on its way.. so neat! I hear that there are about 1,200 of these in the whole world, it is the rarest animal I have ever photographed. I feel pretty lucky to have had such an opportunity to get not just this one shot but an entire sequence of it swimming past me. I think I have 22 photos of it total? Its a really cool sequence.

Anyways, thanks as always for checkin in!
